Fitting Gas Cookers in Flats and Maisonettes

If you want to fit a gas cooker in your property and you live in a multioccupancy dwelling such as a flat or maisonette it MUST BE FITTED with a Flame Supervision Device (FSD) also known as Flame Safety Device for each burner. This is a legal requirement.

This device automatically cuts-off the supply of gas should the flame go out preventing a dangerous build-up of gas. The device should be fitted to all burners, not just the oven burner. Some of the older gas cookers do not have a FSD fitted so you need to check the specification of the model before you buy it if it isn’t new.

It is not possible to fit this device to your existing cooker if it was not fitted in the first place.

If you want to have a gas cooker installed, you must use a qualified Gas Safe engineer to do the work. Gas Safe replaced the CORGI Scheme (Council of Registered Gas Installers) from 1st April 2009.

The Gas Safe Register exists to protect you, your family, and your property from dangerous gas work. Incorrectly fitted gas appliances are a major cause of lethal carbon monoxide poisoning and can also lead to gas leaks and explosions.

Gas cookers can’t be installed unless the manufacturer’s installation manual/instructions are available.

You can find a qualified Gas Safe engineer by contacting Gas Safe:

The website has a consumer area and, if you put in your postcode or town, you can search for a qualified engineer in your area.
